WEA-Riverside is the regional council comprised of fifteen local education associations representing over 4,600 professional and classified educators working in Southwest Washington. Collectively we represent K-12 certificated educators, higher education faculty and staff, educational support professionals, retired educators and college students preparing to become teachers.

Education is a social process.  Education is growth.  Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.  - John Dewey

  • Can you join us to lobby?

Have you been following the activities in Olympia this session? The Washington State Supreme Court ruled October 6, 2016, that the Legislature still doesn’t have a plan to fully funding basic education by the September 1, 2018 deadline. That means the court will continue to fine the state $100,000 a day for failing to comply with the court’s earlier order to approve a school funding plan. There is also a strong probability that the legislators will be voting to eliminate the certificated Salary Allocation Model (SAM) this session. We are still filling cars to send to Olympia to talk with legislators. Please contact our office and we can help you to arrange a visit to Olympia to tell your story to our legislators and lobby them to fulfill the McCleary promise to fully fund education. It is an excellent way for legislators to hear first-hand the challenges you face and how important it is to support education with adequate funding and pay.
  • Diversity & Social Justice Conference

Nearly 150 educators gathered on Saturday, March 25, 2017, to participate in the Welcoming Schools, Diversity and Social Justice Conference. Dr. Daniel Spikes, Professor at Iowa State University served as the keynote, highlighting our obligation to create welcoming schools for all students. Conference attendees attended this free, member driven conference, and received 6 clock hours, a scrumptious lunch, and invaluable knowledge. Attendees self-selected from over 20 sessions, ranging from providing support for homeless students, tips for working with Latino/a students, using a trauma based lens when working with students, preventing biased-based bullying, LGBTQ awareness, and much more.
  • Educator Town Hall

On March 11th, 2017, two hundred and seventy-five educators gathered to ask questions of legislators from the 17th and 49th Legislative Districts. The Council invited legislators from the 18th Legislative District also, but none of them were able to attend the event. The legislators: Monica Stonier, Paul Harris, Vicki Kraft, Ann Rivers and Sharon Wylie, listened attentively as K-12 educators asked probing, pointed questions about education in general and the McCleary decision regarding fully funding education.
